About Our Olives

Rumi refers to a variety of olive trees that trace their origins back to Roman times. In Arabic, “Rumi” historically referred to the Eastern Roman Empire and its people. These trees are among the oldest in the world, with many ranging between 1,000 and 2,000 years old. Their age speaks to both their ever-green resilience and the long-standing agricultural traditions that have preserved them.

Rumi olives are native to the eastern Mediterranean, with Jordan recognized as one of their natural habitats. In fact, Jordan is home to some of the oldest olive genotypes in the world. Many Rumi trees in Jordan have trunks reaching up to two meters in diameter.

Olive cultivation began in this region roughly 6,000 years ago. From there, the practice spread across Europe and the rest of the world. Olives hold cultural and spiritual significance in many Abrahamic religions and remain a central part of Mediterranean life today.

In Jordan, about 80 percent of olives are harvested for oil, with the remaining 20 percent used for table olives. Jordanian olive oil is known for its natural flavor, high antioxidant content, and strong chemical profile. The country’s native olive varieties contribute to these distinct characteristics.

Rumi olives are harvested in mid to late November, when they are at peak ripeness for producing nutrient-dense, full-bodied oil.
